Wrong 'Hail Mary' finds its way into Sri Lankan hymn book

by: Garry Pierrepont (16 January 2017)

I read in the online New Indian Express that a Sri Lankan Catholic hymn book mistakenly contained the words of ‘Hail Mary’ by Tupac Shakur (an American rapper) instead of those of the Catholic prayer named ‘Hail Mary’.

At least a thousand copies of the erroneous book were printed and circulated to a church in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The error only came to light on Christmas Day (2016) when social media went viral with pictures of Tupac’s words from the page in the hymn book.

This is an unfortunately spectacular proofreading oversight, which led to the words “Hail Mary, full of grace...” being replaced with the rather more pointed and discomfiting lines from Mr Shakur’s 1997 rap that read: “...Mama told me never stop until I bust a nut. F*** the world if they can’t adjust. It’s just as well, Hail Mary.”

The hymn books were, of course, withdrawn from service.

"It was a human error, a genuine printing mistake ... Those who bought the souvenir (with the hymn sheets) were refunded," Edmund Tilakaratne, spokesman for the Catholic Church told AFP.

I wonder how many kept their own copy for posterity!
