Even you (and I) need a proofreader

by: Anne O'Connell (2 March 2017)

We've all been there. You've checked and re-checked your work, be it an essay or work presentation, text or tweet. You press send. And THEN you see an error staring you in the face. Why couldn't you see it before? Because your brain doesn't really read what you've written yourself. Not properly, anyway.

Because you've written the content, your brain thinks 'Aha! I know what this says. I can just merrily skip along through these words.' Naughty brain. Taking a break and coming back to your work helps, and so does using the spelling and grammar check functions in your word processor, but it's not the same as a fresh pair of eyes.

So whether you lack confidence in your own written work or you've been a professional proofreader for years, it's worth getting your own work checked before you send it off, especially if it's something important like a dissertation or CV.
