Bank holidays ahoy!

by: Anne O'Connell (12 April 2017)

What's better than a bank holiday weekend? A weekend with two bank holidays! Easter weekend is nearly here, which may mean you get more time off work. If you're not in the retail or service industry that is ...

It's clear why Good Friday and Christmas Day might warrant a day free from business in a country with a Christian national church. But how did the other bank holidays arise? Boxing Day, for example. The OED says the term first related to the 'Christmas boxes' of cash or gifts given to servants or traders for good service; that does sound a bit more Christmassy.

Whether or not this weekend has religious significance for you, I hope you get to do what makes you happy. Then, as Blur said, it's back to work A.G.A.I.N. Until the next bank holiday in May!
