Musical heroes

by: Anne O'Connell (18 May 2017)

Yesterday, I took a friend to see Their Mortal Remains, the Pink Floyd Exhibition at the V&A. It made me ponder the nature of fandom and wonder why we hold our favourite musicians and performers so dear, why we put them on a pedestal and revere their work to a degree that we don't, say, with engineers or surgeons.

Whether or not we're aspiring (or failed) musicians ourselves, there is something so removed from the everyday in reaching millions with a lyric or riff that a band seems to be made up of otherworldly beings who can transport us away from our worries or show that they have had them too.

The exhibition is excellent, chock-full of memorabilia and accompanied by a soundtrack of music and interviews that play automatically through headphones based on your location. For a fan, it's a must-see, and for the friend with a casual interest accompanying the fan, a jolly good way to spend an afternoon.
