How to keep working in the heat!

by: Garry Pierrepont (20 June 2017)

Apparently here in the UK we've been going through the longest sustained period of hot June weather for 20 years. It's hot, sticky and if you don't work in an air-conditioned office, it's almost impossible to keep your cool. So, if you work for yourself – writing, proofreading, editing, maybe – and work from home, how do you stay cool?

The advice is:

  • Drink plenty of water (keep hydrated) – up to four cups every hour.
  • Avoid alcohol or drinks with caffeine or large amounts of sugar.
  • Although it might be tempting to work outdoors, avoid sitting in the sun, restrict your outdoor working to mornings or evenings, and work in the shade.
  • Wear light and loose-fittings clothes and, if outside, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream.

In the UK, we're not used to such heat on a regular basis, but we can't just stop! Take these suggestions to keep on working and let's all enjoy this lovely weather! Remember, it'll probably be raining by the weekend!
