Brits centre stage in a quintessentially English event

by: Anne O'Connell (12 July 2017)

Johanna Konta beat Simona Halep yesterday to become the first British woman to reach a Wimbledon singles semi-final since Virginia Wade 1978; however, it being Wimbledon, she did so in the Ladies' Singles not the Women's Singles as she might at, say, the Australian Open. That reference to Ladies and Gentlemen in the competition names, along with the strict all-white dress code and reported 28,000 kg of strawberries and 320,000 glasses of Pimm's, makes The Championships at Wimbledon about as English as it gets.

I say English rather than British for a reason: most of the events that make up the British summer season, including the Chelsea Flower Show, Glyndebourne, Royal Ascot and Henley Royal Regatta, are in or within easy reach of London, and are held between Easter and the start of the grouse shooting season on the 'glorious' 12 August. It seems the upper classes of years gone by needed a lot of events to keep them out of mischief!

The British summer feels too brief to me, so enjoy it while you can. Although, on past performance, that may mean having a stiff drink rather than a refreshing glass of Robinson's squash as you bite your nails watching Andy Murray bid to make the semi-finals himself today.
