How will i fare?

by: Garry Pierrepont (19 January 2011)

It is rare indeed for a new newspaper to be launched and in the second decade of the 21st Century we might imagine that we would see no more fresh newspapers, what with the Internet, mobiles, e-book (newspaper) readers etc.

Not so. Enter i, the new newspaper from The Independent, selling for just 20p.

i claims to be the new concise, quality newspaper. It says that it bring you "only what you need to know" and it's certainly true that too many other newspapers concentrate on things that you really don't need to know, and should care about even less.

In keeping with the Internet-generation, i's stories are said to be short and to-the-point with information boxes so that you can read more about stories of interest (a kind of "click for more" approach).

Not all newspapers succeed and in these competitive times not just from other newspapers, but from many other modern ways of receiving news it will be interesting to see how i fares.

These are two good summaries, printed on The Indepndent's website:

NOEL GALLAGHER said: "It's a top idea to have a paper for clever people who can't be arsed to spend hours reading every day."

RONNI ANCONA said: "The launch of a new newspaper happens only once in a generation and I'm breathless with excitement for the launch of i. It's everything I've been waiting for."
