Why is my CV rejected?

by: Romany Howes (21 October 2011)

You may think that you are the best person for the job, but the potential employer has other ideas. And his impression is taken solely from your CV. So where are you going wrong?

Did you attach a covering letter? This should be customised for the job advertised. If you are using a template, make sure you check the names and addresses that the letter is being sent to.

The first 20-30 seconds of reading a CV are the most important. If it doesn't catch the eye by then, forget it. Work experience at the start will help your cause.

Would an interviewer want to see you? Do you sound interesting enough? More importantly, do you have the qualities he is looking for? List your capabilities and your major achievements as soon as possible.

If your CV looks bad, then by association, you will be bad. Use clear and concise headings and layouts. And check the spelling very carefully.

Use good quality paper. Cheap and cheerful looks cheap but not necessarily cheerful. Finally, do not lose heart if you do not get a reply. You are one of many applying to every job. Just make sure that your CV is professional and targeted to the job advertised.
