Encourage a love of reading

by: Marilyn Owen (22 January 2014)

A love of reading needs to begin when children are very young and their best role models are their parents. For this reason, parents who want to encourage their children to read need to be seen reading regularly themselves. It is recommended that they also encourage their children to join the local library and perhaps borrow around five books at a time. If parents make special times to read regularly with their children, discussing the characters and storylines, they will provide a much-needed alternative to TV and computer games, and enrich their children’s lives immeasurably.

Remember that all forms of reading are worthwhile, including not only traditional books but newspapers, magazines and, yes, e-readers.

Teachingnews.co.uk has a great article on ways and means of getting children to love reading. E-readers are especially recommended as they have the advantage of providing progress reminders as well as an indication of reading speed. Youngsters will love this feature – especially those more technically inclined!
